What is the dissertation about and why is it important? Traditionally, females come under the category of ‘minority’ entrepreneurs while male entrepreneurs are considered the dominant force in entrepreneurship. However, does this theory hold true in the female liberated world of fashion? After discovering the pioneering works of Natalie Massenet (creator of Net-A-Porter) in the world of luxury online retailing, this has opened the window of curiosity as to how females are such prominent figures yet are branded as minorities in entrepreneurship. In an industry which reaches and affects†¦show more content†¦Scotland has a thriving, yet often overlooked, fashion industry with independent labels and boutiques appearing online and throughout major cities. Having witnessed graduate fashion shows in and seeing the proportion of graduate designers continue their careers in fashion through business start-ups, it occurred to me that the minority of these entrepreneurs are male. This dissertation is important to understanding whether traditional theories of minority entrepreneurs hold true across industry to industry or whether it is just a generalised stereotype which no longer exists. Although the fashion industry is associated with art and creativity and not so much the black and white world of business and finance, in order for an industry to thrive there must be a board of business directors or business savvy owners to create profit. Nonetheless, prejudice still persists amongst females in the business world which can transfer across from industry to industry and although the fashion is associated with an art form, there is still the black and white business side which is controlled by males too. In business start-ups it is easier for men to break into the world of business as they do not have to face the added pressure of prejudice for being female. Therefore, this dissertation seeks to make a contribution towards abolishing the branding of females bei ng considered as minority entrepreneurs through the study of fashion start-ups. 3. The childhood obesity prevalence in America has been considered a national health crisis. It is postulated that one out of every three children of ages (3-17) are either overweight or obese. It continues to be an issue even after the advancement of the many efforts towards ensuring the health of the children in our society. There is an increase in the rates of childhood obesity despite the spread of awareness about the risk of excess weight (Kamath, Celia et al 4619). According to a study done by Christina, about 43% of children in the United states have at least 1-2 chronic heal conditions which increases to a 54.1% when the child is overweight. This shows that being obese also increases the risks of fatality of an illness in an individual. A different study done by (Kamath, Celia et al 4615) revealed that prevention of the condition is better than trying to manage the condition as pediatric efforts do not play a huge role in reducing the BMI and changes are seen after a very long time. It however can be helpful to those who already had the condition for instance the children who have inherited the condition can be helped through pediatric efforts to manage themselves and maintain their health. Obesity has been projected to cause over 100,000 deaths annually in the United States. Childhood obesity is more predominant in other ethnic and racial groups than others are.
